Langley Law Firm is an Arizona AV rated insurance defense law firm. The firm began in October 2004 when its principals moved from active practice in California to Arizona. The firm consists of 3 attorneys, 2 paralegals and 4 support staff. Mr. Langley has been a coverage attorney and insurance defense litigator since 1973, having attained his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of San Francisco Law School. He is actively licensed in Arizona and California and has tried in excess of 80 jury trials in federal and state courts including several first party bad faith, serious injury, wrongful death, professional liability, trademark infringement and punitive damage cases. His most recent defense jury trials in Arizona involved a tire tread separation rollover of a Ford Explorer which resulted in a successful unanimous defense verdict and a defamation, false light and breach of contract action against a Property Owners’ Association. Mr. Langley also obtained a defense verdict in an insurance bad faith action in California which he co-tried with his partner, Kathleen Langley. He has diversified expertise in construction defect, property, fraud, arson and coverage matters including examinations under oath and appraisals. He is also a licensed civil engineer in the State of California.
Mr. Langley is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), American Bar Association, Arizona and California Bar Associations, Defense Research Institute, Northern California Association of Defense Counsel, Arizona Association of Defense Counsel, and the Maricopa County and Scottsdale Bar Associations. He has presented at various continuing education courses and seminars including the ABA and the Property Loss Research Bureau. In 2004 he was featured in Law Technology News regarding his successful defense of a brain injury jury trial in Santa Monica, California.
Ms. Langley is the managing partner for the firm and has been a litigator since 1982. She has handled several California state court jury trials to verdict involving wrongful death, catastrophic personal injury and dental malpractice claims, has tried and co-tried several jury trials in Arizona and has handled hundreds of binding and non-binding ADR proceedings, including arbitrations and mediations. She handles a variety of cases, including personal injury, wrongful death and medical malpractice matters, particularly in the area of misdiagnosis and failure to diagnose melanoma on behalf of Plaintiffs. As managing partner, she supervises and mentors the firm’s associate attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants and is responsible for teaching them trial practice skills. She has coached the firm’s former and present associate attorneys in several Arizona jury trials to verdict.
Ms. Langley received her Juris Doctorate degree from San Francisco Law School in 1981 and is actively licensed in the States of Arizona and California. She is a member of the Arizona and California Bar Associations, American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), Defense Research Institute, Maricopa County and Scottsdale Bar Associations and the Arizona Association of Defense Counsel. She is a trained mediator and co-taught mediation and negotiation courses at Stanford and Hastings Law Schools. She was a faculty member of the 2009 Arizona College of Trial Advocacy. Ms. Langley also has been a member of the Board of Directors for a Scottsdale community association and is currently on the Board of Directors for a charitable non-profit corporation dedicated to cancer research. Ms. Langley is an active volunteer with HopeKids, a non-profit dedicated to providing events and activities for families of children with life-threatening conditions and she serves on HopeKids’ hospital visitation team for gravely ill children.
Ryan M. Sweeney joined the firm’s litigation department in 2016. His experience and areas of practice include insurance defense and insurance coverage matters; personal injury; products liability; construction defect; land use, zoning, and real property disputes; governmental liability; administrative law; and business litigation.
Originally from Indiana, Ryan received a National Merit scholarship to attend Arizona State University, where he was a member of the Sun Devil Mock Trial Team. While in law school, Ryan was a Raúl Héctor Castro Scholar and served as an editor of the Arizona Summit Law Review. He also served as the school’s representative to the American Bar Association and a Lieutenant Governor of the ABA Law Student Division and had the honor of working at the Arizona Supreme Court and the City Attorney’s Office for the City of Phoenix.
Ryan is a member of the Arizona Association of Defense Counsel, the Maricopa Bar Association and the State Bar of Arizona. He is licensed to practice law in Arizona.
Ms. Dunlap is a certified paralegal and joined the firm in 2008. She earned her B.S. from Arizona State University in 1985 and received an ABA approved paralegal certificate in 1992 from Phoenix College. Her background includes in excess of 30 years of experience in transactional projects, insurance defense, personal injury, construction defect and commercial litigation. Ms. Dunlap has been with Langley Law Firm since 2008.
Carolyn Emson is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia and graduated from Capilano College with a Certificate of Specialty in Tort Law. Ms. Emson has been a Certified Legal Assistant in excess of 30 years both in Canada and in the United States. She is a Notary Public in and for the County of Maricopa and has experience in the areas of personal injury, insurance bad faith, uninsured and underinsured motorist claims, business litigation, debt collection, Estates, probate and trust litigation, minors’ conservatorship matters and product liability cases. Ms. Emson has worked for a variety of large and small firms through her career and was the lead assistant at a number of those firms. Ms. Emson has been with Langley Law Firm since 2012.
Mr. Mason joined the firm in 2006 as a file project coordinator and legal assistant. He assists the attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants on case projects and maintains organization of the files. Mr. Mason has been with Langley Law Firm since 2006.
